Alec had finally talked himself into coming here. He hadn't run into Lex all day, so she was either gone, avoiding him, or both. However he wasn't going to assume anything because that's what got him into this mess.
He genuinely thought she and Pulse had a thing going on. And with what had happened between them in the Underground the day before...He thought he'd gotten played. No one plays Alec so he made sure that she knew that, got mean, and been an ass to both her and Pulse. Pulse had been the one to straighten things out for him, and now it was time to tell Lex he was wrong for acting the way he did.
Stepping toward her door, he heard her music blaring. Not a good sign. But he'd come here and wasn't going to turn back now.
Taking a deep breath, he knocked a few times, wondering if she'd even open the door for him.
Lex was sitting working a nick from the blade of one of her knives when heard the knock at the door and reacted slowly, not in the mood for company, putting the blade away before advancing on the door, turning the music down as she headed past.
She glanced through the peephole in the door, and sighed, taking another moment before she decided to open the door part way, blocking the opening with her body.
"Did you want something?" She asked, her tone tired.
Alec mentally winced, but at least she wasn't being cruel. Just exasperated with him. He deserved it.
"I wanted to come in," Alec said with perfect sincerity, "But I get it if you'd rather I didn't."
Lex sighed again, and shifted her weight, so that her block on the door was less complete, still unsure, before stepping back to allow him space, pulling completely away from the door so he could come in without coming near her.
"What is it, Slick? Has something happened?" She asked, her tone still quiet. She took a step back from him, so she could see him, but didn't have to look at him, wrapping her arms around herself, in a protective gesture.
"Something..oh no, everything's fine. I needed to talk to you. I just wanted to say that.." Alec trailed off.
This was so much harder than he thought it would be. Maybe if she were furious with him it would be easier. Her expression, her tone...almost like she's given up on him completely was so much worse. But he'd done it. This is what he thought was best. Still did really, and it would be selfish to deprive her of someone who wouldn't put her through all of this just because of how he felt.
And he did feel it. When he was out with Sketch the night before, he'd had his offers, his standby women, all the usual stuff, but he didn't even consider it. All he could think about was how to talk to Lex. Sketchy approved, he got three phone numbers, but had pointed out that he wasn't himself. That's when Alec realized he was falling for Lex.
He stepped inside and looked at her uncomfortably, finally saying, "Look I..just wanted you to know that I talked to Pulse and he told me you two weren't together. So what I said was wrong and I'm...I'm sorry okay?"
Lex let a smile touch the corner of her lips for a second, but the gesture didn't reach her eyes.
"And that makes it okay? That you didn't trust me? That you thought, I was that easy? I mean god, there were kids in that room! It's an album Alec, it charted high enough that the name got on lists, does that mean I boinked everyone that bought it, that's downloaded it since? I'm not...I don't do that. And you know the person before you that thought because I was a singer, I was easy..." She looked at him then, her eyes, a mixed blaze of rage, hurt and humiliation. "...was Tony Luca."
She stopped, her voice shaking. "Do you hate me that much? Did you want to hurt me so much? I hadn't done anything wrong...I still haven't, and yet the pain isn't going away, to be replaced by that feeling of being in the right. The idea that you thought there was, anyone...else...and the idea that I thought that we..."
She'd never raised her voice, changed her tone, and the pain tore through her, she swallowed it, making her voice strong again.
"That you might have cared about me too, it made me happy, but, ya know next time you want to hurt me, just, join the riot. It's easier to fix."
She glanced down at her bandaged hands.
Alec stood there and let her get it out. She needed it and he deserved it, but as she went on he got more frustrated wit them both. She was fighting with him, so he fought back. It was easier than admitting he was wrong. Again.
"Come on Lex," Alec snapped back, "What the hell was I supposed to think?! You said you were in a band. Period. For all I knew, and thought, it could have been a stupid thing with just did with your friends. That's why when I went looking for you in the infirmary and saw you and Pulse messing with something I thought was...I don't know, special or something, I got kind of upset okay? And don't ever compare me to Tony Luca. That's not right or fair and you know it."
He began to pace, glaring at her now and again, not giving her a chance to retaliate, "By the way thanks for letting me hear about that from a couple of X6's," Alec gestured to her hands, "Way to make a guy think he's not being a complete moron by giving a damn. Good job," He snickered darkly.
"You know if I really did hate you, it wouldn't have bothered me at all would it? I would have thought what I did and said 'have fun' and left. God you know what? This is what I get. I told you. I told you from the beginning that all that would happen is you would get hurt didn't I? Well at least I was right about one thing. There. Now we both know better. See ya around."
Alec started to move to the door again but she was in the way.
Lex stared at him, let herself use her gift, make the connection, before she began to speak "You were supposed to trust me Alec, you were supposed to not see me sat at a laptop, with someone who has a thing with a friend of both of ours and assume we'd had sex...you were supposed to know me better than that...And as for letting you know about the fight, as what the second in command at TC, or as something else...as someone who gave a damn?!"
The urge to slap him washed over her, but she knew it would give him the reason he needed to leave, so she pushed it down shifting her focus to four flickering candle flames on her windowsill.
"As for this..." She pulled the bandages from her hands, the wounds were fading, but the ugly bruises still lingered "...I was helping someone, that's all, there just happened to be some fighting, which is all I seem to do these days, I didn't tell you because...god damn it...because even after you spoke to me like that, I was worried about you, what you thought of me, I didn't even know what I'd done and, I was still worried about the fact that I'd hurt you! Moron, right?"
She raised her head, briefly, to look at him again.
"And you know the worst of it, even when you'd assumed I was the worst kind of... and humiliated me in front of the others, I missed you! I mean how stupid would I have to be..."
she looked away from him again, down at the floor, but she refused to move out of his way.
"What are you really doing here. Alec? Just come to yell at me again, or to actually say something? To say 'Lexie, I was a jerk, and I care about you' or did you just come to beat me up some more?" She raised her battered fists in a parodied gesture of a fighting stance. "Put 'em up Slick, I'm still standing."
Alec just stared at Lex. When he finally found his voice he asked, "Did you hear a single word I said?! You know what? I- I can't do this. I won't. It was hard enough the first time I said it."
He took a deep breath and said evenly, "I apologized, and you got what you needed to say out of your system. Because apparently that's all you wanted to do. Yell at me right?"
Lex quirked a smile again, but this time it did reach her eyes. "Yeah, I needed to yell at you, but I forgive you too, Slick...I forget sometimes, that you probably had no idea how much you saying that to me would cut, and it did, anyone else would have got a slapping, but with you...man, I should still slap you but my hands still hurt."
She raised her head to look him in the eye as she stepped towards him. "See, my problem is, I have faith in you Mr Second in Command, and if you want me to be..." Another step closer, close enough to lay a bruised hand on his cheek, she spoke softly "...I guess, I'm still here, and still not looking anywhere else."
Alec looked at her, wishing should would slap him, he hated himself so much. He didn't deserve Lex. But she didn't seem to mind.
"Why? All I've done is make things hard for you," Alec said, his voice breaking. He closed his eyes, taking her hurt hand in his, and still holding it close to his face, turned and kissed it.
Remorse was consuming him and all he wanted to do was find a way to make her never hurt again.
"I'm sorry," He whispered.
"I know." Lex's voice was soft, shaking too. "I know." She looked at the floor before looking straight an him again "And why? I don't know why, but it's how things are for me. I want..." She bent her head and kissed him softly "...you."
Alec closed his eyes as she kissed him, her words sinking in, filling him with some foreign emotion that terrified him, but never wanted to it leave.
"Thank you," Alec whispered, glad to be forgiven, glad he was here. He knew that this may be a mistake, but...maybe she was right. Maybe it was one worth making.
Stepping closer, his eyes filled with emotion he kissed her. It began gently, carefully, but soon all of the feelings he'd suppressed were making their way to the surface. One hand pulling her as close to him as possible by the small of her back, the other on her face, in her hair.
Soon he began to kiss her jawline, then neck, whispering her name in between each skilled kiss. All the while he kept in mind her fragile state, so though passionate, he remained gentle.
Lex found herself responding, quickly, too quickly, an urgency to have, whatever the hell this would turn out to be filling her, every kiss sending shock waves through her.
Her hands traveled one tangling in his hair, the other settling on his back, had they been any closer they might have fused.
The candles on the windowsill guttered, and the nearest one to them flicked and died, almost unnoticed.
"Alec..." She dragged herself away from him, though every fiber of her didn't want to, almost couldn't. She was breathing hard, and she could still taste him on her lips.
The track behind them flipped and a voice, speaking rose from the player, a woman.
"Hey Lexie, big love, we wish we were there, you'll be fine, just remember..."
'You Got A Friend In Me' rose from the speakers.
Alec still breathless as she pulled away, stopped short when he heard the song. Then suddenly he found himself chuckling. He shook his head and pulled Lex to him again, only this time, he simply kissed the top of her hair and breathed her in for a moment.
Taking her waist in both hands, he stepped backwards until they reached the couch and he pulled her gently on his lap, facing him. He didn't move, a small smile on his face, and he pushed her hair from hers.
Lex laughed lightly "Even when she's not here she gets in the middle of things that aren't her business."
The chuckle became full belly laugh, which brought tears of mirth to her eyes. She allowed it to pass through her and calm her down, before she leaned forward to kiss Alec again, softly, and quickly, before pulling away again.
"So, we're on speaking terms again now, huh?"
"I hope so," Alec said, "Though I have to admit that speaking," He kissed her lightly on the neck with a smirk, "Isn't exactly top priority on my mind now."
"Oh really" Lex said, her tone teasing, as she shifted her weight in his lap. "I wouldn't have known if you hadn't have said!" She leaned forward and kissed him again, nipping at his bottom lip.
Alec made a small moaning sound as she kissed him, the movement causing him to be aware of how close they were.
"That's so not fair," He said, his words coming out in a rush.
A wicked glint in his eye, he kissed her back, deeper, and allowed his hands to roam, sensing by her responses which strings to pull.
He began to tease her, moving his hands to explore the way he'd wanted to for so long, letting them linger and...
"Oh you've got to be kidding me," Alec muttered and looked at Lex, while his phone rang in his pocket.
Lex sighed and shifted sideways off Alec's lap.
"It's got to be important, but, pick it up quickly, before I have to do something destructive!"
Lex groaned and got off the sofa, rolling her shoulders, before resetting the CD, leaving Alec to his call.
Laying his head back on the couch in frustration, he pulled the phone out and regrettably answered, standing up, grinning a bit at Lex's frustration. Good to see it wasn't one sided.
"This is Alec...yeah I know that, Romeo is on it..no I can't send her in. She's busy. No...Because it's none of your business...Why can't they?...Okay..Okay fine," Alec sighed, "Give me a few to get there and I'll take care of it. Tell everyone to watch out and hold off on doing anything until I get there...I know, don't worry. Bye."
Alec clicked the phone shut and turn apologetically to Lex.
"I'd give you two guesses what that was about but you'd only need one."
Lex sighed. "Do we have a stability issue in the tunnels again?" She asked, concern crossing her annoyance "Is everyone OK?"
She crossed the room. "I would ask if I'm needed but, my 'phone has yet to ring."
Shaking his head, "I wish. Security. They think that the National Guard is looking for a new way in and want to look into it. I have to call Max and let her know. They're always looking for a new way in, and we have to make sure it doesn't get father than looking."
"Honestly? I'd rather you stay here," Alec smiled at her, rubbing her arms at her sides, "In case I do need to ring your phone."
Alec leaned in and kissed her softly. Then when he pulled back he asked with a wry grin, "Now I'm going to go and hope that you haven't come to your senses about me while I'm gone."
Lex chuckled slowly "I only just got you to come to yours, you think I'd let up that easy?"
Her tone changed and she caught him at the door. "Be careful Alec." She lightened her tone again. "Coz' you end up dead I'm gonna kill you!" She kissed him again before letting him go. "Go, save the world, just be sure to come back to me, OK?"
Alec grinned and rolled his eyes on the way out.
"Saving the world...new gig for me. But one I won't mess up so don't worry," He said nonchalantly.
He kissed Lex again and said, "I'll call you when I can...but don't wait up okay?"
Alec kissed her one last time, lightly nipping her bottom lip, not wanting to leave. Resigned though, he walked backwards until he was out the hall. Shooting her one last grin, he left.
Lex settled back onto her corpse of a sofa, having re lit the snuffed candle and picked up the knife she had been working on before Alec showed up, and attempted to keep her mind on the task at hand, dragging a whetstone over the chipped blade, but her concentration kept slipping.
Just let him be OK she glanced at the candles in the window I won't light another of those things.
She finished her work with the blade, and tested it's keenness on her thumb, before sighing, and heading to bed, keeping her cell hone close at hand. Just in case.
