[Current Location |Seattle Underground, Washington]
[mood |Industrious]
[music |30 Seconds to Mars - End of the Beginning]

Through purple skylights, an eerie lilac light filters down to illuminate an all but forgotten city known as the Seattle Underground.

The passages of the subterranean ghost town are dank and dusty. The windows and doors of long abandoned shops and dwellings break the monotony of red brick walls. Broken relics of a bygone era can be found scattered throughout the labyrinthine streets and buildings of the buried city, as well as more modern litter, left behind by urban explorers and shelter-seeking transients.

Patches of restored buildings mingle with ruin, the niceties of Pre-Pulse historical interest having offered partial salvation. But mostly, the decaying bricks remain coated with the soot and ash of a fire that raged long ago, the once-sturdy walls of the Underground now crumbling beneath the weight of the modern city built atop them.

Pulse's Crib - Renovating

When his shift ended, Pulse headed down into the underground, pushing a cart full of building tools and materials, making his way to the house Alec had helped him find the previous day. Stepping inside, he gazed around, visualizing how the place would look once it was fixed up, mentally cataloguing what would have to be done to get it to that point.

All in all, the required repairwork wasn't too extensive. The floorboards on the lower level would have to be replaced, though the ones on the upper level seemed to be fine. A cursory inspection the previous day had revealed that some of the steps in the staircase would need to be repaired, but that the foundations and rafters were fairly solid. The plaster was in bad condition, but he was considering just ripping it out and leaving the brick exposed on the lower level. The house would have to be rewired, and he would also need to install soundproofing to prevent noise leaking into the building above his house.

After a moments contemplation, Pulse pulled one of the sledge hammers from the cart, headed to the furthest corner, and drove it through the rotted floorboards.

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

"Do you have any unresolved aggression that I should know about? Because if you do, I can come back later?" Jinx asked his friend by way of greeting.

Laughing a little he walked in the house and held his hand out to Pulse and said, "What's up man. Sorry I'm late...I think..." He spoke, noticing no one else had gotten there yet either.

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

"Don't we all?" Pulse chuckled wryly, pausing in his task briefly to grin at his friend, "But nah, I'm good, and you're not late, I just wanted to get a start on this. Pull up a hammer, Man."

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

Doing so Jinx, raised his eyebrows at him and began to work, "Well not really tell ya the truth. I mean there's all this," Jinx motioned to their surrounds, but knew Pulse would understand that he meant the chaos of being a transgenic.

"But it's not all bad you know. I've got my friends, glad-your-back-by-the-way," Jinx added that quickly, "And I'm supposed to be getting married soon. Libra is really getting into the idea of this. She.." Jinx stopped hearing her soft footsteps that he would recognize as her anywhere.

"Speak of the devil and he shall appear. Or she in this case. In here!" Jinx called out to Libra.

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

Libra made her way through the house, easily moving around the dangerous places until she spotted Jinx. Smiling at Pulse on the way over, she moved immediately to Jinx and kissed him unashamedly. She wasn't working now and Libra never cared what anyone thought.

"Hey, you could have waited for me," She accused.
"You were so sweet sleeping. It was a nice change," Jinx responded.
"You're lucky I love you enough to let you get away with that," Libra responded and punched his arm. Then she rolled her eyes as he kissed her forehead.

"So I just dropped by to tell you they needed Alec really fast in the mess hall. Something to do with Scale, I don't know. I think they're done now, but Ruby and Lenz were there so I'm going to go drag at least those two away. They said they wanted to help," Libra said the last sentence to Pulse.

"Anyway, I'll be back in a few minutes. Try to survive without me," Libra grinned, kissed Jinx again and left with swift and grace that would break the heart of a ballerina. Jinx watched her go and smiled to himself for a moment before returning to Pulse's side.

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

"Looks like you've been dealt a pretty sweet hand, my man," Pulse grinned at Jinx, "And yeah, I'm glad to be back."

He was quiet for a moment, and when he spoke again, his voice was thoughtful, "When I got out, all I wanted to do was get away from everything I was back at Manticore. I discovered music and it became my whole world - something I could escape into, ya know?" He glanced briefly at his friend for confirmation as he ripped up some of the flooring and tossed it toward the junk pile, "So I was pretty bummed out when it all came crashing down. But I gotta say, that it's not the worst thing that could've happened. I can still make my music, but I'm needed for more than just a good time here. I'm back among people I know that I can trust. Plus... I probably never would've met Jondy if not for that whole mob thing at that rave..."

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

"Yeah, dude I had to hear about your little closet rendezvous from that little X6, Skye. We never did have a chance to talk about what's up with you two after that. And me properly telling you off for having to hear about it..oh I don't know...eighth hand?" Jinx laughed, talking and working at the same time.

"You're right though. Saying I made out pretty good wouldn't even come close," Jinx said quietly, more thoughtful and earnest.

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

"Dude!" Pulse laughed, "To set the record straight, it was not a closet. It was an actual building, with a handily placed support column..."

He let the sentance drift off without elaborating on the details of his tryst with Jondy any further, then shrugged and added, "But to tell you the truth man, I'm not entirely sure what's going on between me and Jondy... It's kind of complicated."

Setting down his hammer, Pulse strained to haul up a particularly stubborn board.

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

"Hey, no judgment. I've done the closet thing. Buildings are easier and columns are better," Jinx smirked.

"I think I can follow if you want to tell me," Jinx said and moved to help Pulse with the board, "If not that's cool too."

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

Pulse worked wordlessly for a moment as he gathered his thoughts.

"I uh, well, Jondy is amazing. She's beautiful and smart and funny and strong... I get this buzz just being around her. In case you haven't already guessed, I really like her, a lot." He chuckled at himself slightly, then shrugged, his expression growing serious, "And I think Jondy likes me too... But the thing is, Jondy says she just wants to be friends with benefits."

Pulse shrugged and drove his hammer through the floorboards again.

"Which isn't enough," Jinx said as if finishing Pulse's sentence. He thought about that for a second.

"How does she act around you? I mean when you aren't having sex?"

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

"No, it's not," Pulse sighed and shrugged, "And we're not yet. Not that I don't want to, but I figure I can't go there with her until she sees me as something more than a fuckbuddy. I don't wanna be just another guy she messes around with till she finds someone new. The idea of her with some other guy twists me up, to tell you the truth."

Uncomfortable, he focussed intently on his task, "And to answer your questions, she's sweet, but I can tell she's holding me at arms length. She's been hurt, a lot, by different people," A muscle worked in his jaw as he clenched his teeth, thinking about what Zack had done to her, "So she doesn't really let anyone in."

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

"Let me take a guess. Everytime you start to get personal, she backs off or tries to distract you. She doesn't talk about her past, how she feels, basically anything other than what she wants outside of the bedroom," Jinx said almost nonchalantly as he stood up, stopping completely to lean on a nearby piece of lumber.

"She tries to rationalize any feelings she has with logic. Like she's lonely and looking for comfort anywhere she can get it, or it's a basic need that's being fulfilled, nothing more. Because she doesn't need anyone, she refuses to let anyone get close enough to be able to leave, and she doesn't want to feel any sense of vulnerability. That about cover it?"

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

"Got it in one, man," Pulse confirmed, "That first night, when we went back to my old crib to get some of my stuff after she came and got me out of that jam, we were comparing notes on life after Manticore, and she opened up a little and talked to me... Told me some of the stuff she'd been through. Just because she was free doesn't mean she had it easy. Actually, anything but."

Thinking about the way she'd been deserted and betrayed and hurt, he swung his hammer with more force than was necessary, wood splinters flying, "Anyway, she dyed my hair for me, and things were going great, we were laughing and talking... Right up until she kissed me, and wow, the girl can kiss. But then she freaked out."

He shrugged, pulling up the broken boards, "We talked the next day, and she said she liked me, but that didn't want to get into anything too deep with me, that she just wanted to have fun. And since then, yeah, she's wanted to do everything except talk. Not that I don't enjoy making out, but I want to get to know her better."

Re: Pulse's Crib - Renovating

Jinx nodded at Pulse's words. Though his situation was different, Jinx still wanted to say 'been there, done that bro.'

He pulled up more boards along with Pulse and tossed them toward the junk pile. Choosing his words carefully, Jinx finally spoke.

"We've had it hard, but so has she. You said so yourself. I can't imagine what it like to be out there, living the way she did. However she learned something that we all developed when we got out. Me and Li not so much, but with one another, yeah. And that was to be careful, watch out for ourselves, and only us. We've done it for almost a year. She's done it since she was a kid."

"That's something that you can't just change automatically, and I know you know that. But maybe she doesn't even realize that that's what she's doing. Patience is key," Jinx advised.

"And persistence. And more patience. She'll want to give up. It'll get too hard, too scary, too whatever. She'll find a reason, trust me. I don't know Jondy like you do, so I can't say I know exactly how she'll react. It's riskier with you two than it was with me and Li. We were all we had and...I can't explain it."

He wasn't going to try now either. This was about Pulse and Jondy, not him and Libra.

"So you're taking a chance, but you have to ask yourself if it's going to be worth it," Jinx said honestly, bluntly, but kindly as was his fashion. "I mean do you think there's a chance for anything else?"
